Practice Guidelines for Chronic Pain Management:
An Updated Report by the American Society of
Anesthesiologists Task Force on Chronic Pain
Management and the American Society of Regional
Anesthesia and Pain Medicine
April 2010 - For the first time in more than a
decade, the American Society of Anesthesiologists
Task Force on Chronic Pain Management has updated
its chronic pain guidelines. The new recommendations
are designed to help clinicians who treat pain. The
objectives are to optimize pain control, enhance
physical and psychological well-being, and minimize
adverse outcomes.

New Report Calls for Urgent Medical Training and
Health System Reform on Pain
November 2009 -
In an effort to urge the medical community,
government agencies and Congress to address the
inefficiencies in chronic pain care and treatment,
the American Pain Foundation along with more
than 30 other organizations endorsed a new report
released by the Mayday Fund, A Call to Revolutionize
Chronic Pain Care in America: An Opportunity in
Health Care Reform calling for urgent medical
training and health care reform on pain.

Pain Connection Named Recipient of Healthcare
Initiative Foundation Grant
December
2008 - The Healthcare Initiative Foundation has
awarded Pain Connection a grant to increase the
pool of trained mental health professionals to
meet the unique psychosocial needs of chronic pain
sufferers and their families in Montgomery County.
This grant will enable chronic pain sufferers,
family members, local agencies, medical and mental
health professionals the opportunity to learn
various coping skills, psychosocial issues,
meditation and guided imagery. Please

Sufferers Get Relief
July 2008 - Potomac resident, Maryland Pain Initiative
member and social worker Gwenn Herman leads efforts to raise
awareness about pain. Herman also works as a leader
representing Maryland for the American Pain Foundation’s
Power over Pain Action Network, a grassroots organization of
pain advocates nationwide.

Survey Shows One in Three Marylanders Suffers With
Serious Pain
March, 2002 - More than one in three Marylanders
say they live with moderate to severe pain, and that this
condition impacts almost every aspect of their lives-including
sleep, work, and social and sexual relations. These are some
of the findings of Pain in Maryland, a survey
commissioned by the American Pain Foundation and the Maryland
Pain Initiative.

Maryland Pain Initiative Is
Established!
February, 2002 - The Maryland Pain
Initiative (MPI) has been active in establishing itself and
advocating on behalf of all Marylanders affected by pain. MPI
made its official debut at the American Pain Society's 21st
Annual Scientific Meeting, March 14-17, 2002 in Baltimore,
MD. In recognition of MPI's debut, Baltimore mayor Martin
O'Malley and Maryland Governor Parris Glendening proclaimed
March 2002 as "Pain Awareness Month" and urged all citizens to
join in this celebration.
